Which part of the South and South East has the cleanest beaches?
We study this annually for our Brown Flag Awards, which uses Environment Agency data on water cleanliness. The winners in the South East are Hampshire, New Forest and the Isle of Wight. About three quarters of tested beaches in Hampshire/New Forest and the Isle of Wight are rated as excellent for water quality (73%). In Kent, Essex and Sussex about 40% - 50% of the beaches are rated as excellent. Which part of the South East is good for coastal walks?
There's hot competition here! The Isle of Wight has some great coastal walks and the advantage of being able to do a circular route. It's particularly scenic around the West Wight whilst some parts of the North East coastline are further inland. Kent has a long and impressive coastal path linking together places like Whitstable, Herne Bay, Margate, Ramsgate and Deal. The most famous though is arguably Sussex, which includes The South Downs Way and the Seven Sisters.
