Park Holidays UK has two holiday parks within Felixstowe. We've been to them both and concluded that they are both good sites - but both have advantages and disadvantages over each other. Here's what we thought when we visited Suffolk Sands Holiday Park. First impressions of Suffolk Sands Holiday ParkWhen we visited Suffolk Sands Holiday Park, we were blessed with sunny weather, even if it was a little bit breezy. Personally, I like a bit of a sea breeze and we made the most of Suffolk Sands excellent location, which overlooks the sea at Felixstowe. The layout of the holiday park is quite unusual as there is a quiet public road going through the middle of the park. If possible, get yourself one of the caravans that are on the front row overlooking the sea. When we visited, we found these had quite a different vibe and feel to caravans that were further back. On the seafront, we enjoyed the feel of the wind blowing in our hair. I'm feeling a little bit emotional just thinking about it... In this regard then, we preferred Suffolk Sands Holiday Park to Felixstowe Beach Holiday Park. The latter is a 10 minute walk to the seafront while Suffolk Sands couldn't really be any closer. Some of the caravans are so close you can smell the salt in the air. Facilities at Suffolk Sands Holiday ParkIt's fair to say that Suffolk Sands Holiday Park is not jam-packed with facilities. There's a small playground and a reception but really that's about it. For us, an indoor swimming pool is quite important on holiday as the children love a quick dip. Yes, you've got the sea but it doesn't always look that appealing for swimming, particularly outside of peak summer! Location of Suffolk Sands Holiday ParkOne thing we quite liked about Suffolk Sands Holiday Park is the juxtaposition of the industrial and the natural. This won't appeal to everyone but I found it quite unusual and interesting. On one side of the park you've got the beach and a footpath that leads further along the coastline. On the other side of the park, you can see the shipping containers and giant cranes of Felixstowe's port. Vibe and atmosphere at Suffolk Sands Holiday Park We certainly found Suffolk Sands Holiday Park to be a quiet holiday park rather than one with a busy buzz. It has more green space than we found at Felixstowe Beach Holiday Park when we visited there. However, I would say that you are better to see Suffolk Sands Holiday Park as somewhere to admire the view and then walk along the coastline rather than an entertainment hub. Local areaEven if you aren't lucky enough to have a seafront caravan at Suffolk Sands Holiday Park, then you will still be able to walk along the wide esplanade at Felixstowe. Here you will find a nice mix of traditional seafront fun and a couple of places to eat. We found a fish and chip shop, amusement arcades and of course the giant wheel, which can't be missed! Final thoughts on Suffolk Sands Holiday ParkWe enjoyed our visit to Suffolk Sands Holiday Park. It is a neat and well-maintained holiday park with lovely smooth roads and consistent signs around the site. This gives it a very smart and modern feel.
The caravans are fairly close together and are mostly in rows rather than in crescents and cul-de-sacs. However, most of the caravans are very modern and the location next to the beach is a massive tick for us. Personally, I would prefer a swimming pool as well but that's not the be-all and end-all. In summary, I would give Suffolk Sands Holiday Park a thumbs up if you fancy a stay in Felixstowe.
