Parkdean Resorts refer to Cayton Bay Holiday Park in Yorkshire as one of their 10 Action Packed Parks, so we were keen to see for ourself what it had to offer. Our visit coincided with some beautiful sunny weather, which immediately gave the park a lovely glow and a holiday atmosphere. Attractions galore at Parkdean Resorts Cayton Bay Holiday ParkTrue to the 'Action Packed' description, we found Cayton Bay Holiday Park has loads to do on site. What we particularly liked about our visit was that the activities are formed around a focal point, so that - for example - the high ropes are practically on top of the main restaurant. The layout at Cayton Bay Holiday ParkThis village setup works much better than having a few random things spread out over a large space, which is the case with some (mostly older) resorts. The same 'action' area has a playground, which has clearly been modernised recently, along with some places to eat, plus bungee trampolines and other things to do. Our experience from visiting is that this setup works really well for a family with children of different ages. The younger ones can be kept occupied on the playground whilst the older ones are on the high ropes or bungee trampoline. Needless to say, you'll pay extra for some things but we haven't found Parkdean Resorts to be over-priced. Swimming at Cayton Bay Holiday ParkThe indoor swimming pool at Cayton Bay Holiday Park is a pretty good size and has some slides to mess around on. It is certainly not on the scale of some holiday park waterparks (e.g. Haven Hafan y Môr Holiday Park) but it is pretty decent and modern and warrants a few visits during your holiday. Layout and vibe at Cayton Bay Holiday ParkAs we continued to explore the site and get our bearings, we decided that the layout of Cayton Bay Holiday Park is very pleasant with lots of grass and a fair amount of character. However, we did feel that the caravans are fairly close together and whilst some get a bit of a view, it isn't the sort of place where you will get wonderful views of the sea or cliffs. Exploring the beach at Cayton BayThe beach at Cayton Bay Holiday Park is really rather lovely. There isn't direct access from the holiday park but we found it didn't take very long to get our toes onto the sand (10 minutes on foot from the park entrance). Whilst there is a fairly busy road nearby, you can take an underpass so you don't have to deal with very heavy traffic. You then walk down a steep slope for quite a long way and then reach the steps next to a café called the Salty Dog. We sat here for some time and enjoyed watching the comings and goings, before heading towards the beach. This part of Yorkshire's coastline really is spectacular. Without wishing to sound negative or to stoke county rivalries, I very much prefer it to the Lincolnshire and Norfolk coastline. Those tend to be much flatter, whereas I love the sight of looming cliffs and headlands that curve round corners. Of course, some people prefer long straight beaches like Skegness (and I'm not going to arm wrestle you over it) but my taste is for something a bit more sheltered and varied in landscape. Final thoughts about Cayton Bay Holiday ParkIn conclusion, we were really impressed with Cayton Bay Holiday Park and consider it one of the best of the large Parkdean Resort holiday parks that we've visited. There are, of course, many smaller resorts that do a good job of offering simple facilities and good quality accommodation. However, if you want the option of spending quite a lot of time on site as well as having a beach on the doorstep then Cayton Bay is a great choice.
