We fell in love with the views at Old Mill Holiday Park

Old Mill Holiday Park in St. Helens is one of several highly rated family-owned holiday parks on the Isle of Wight.

We visited the park recently and thought we'd write up our thoughts.

Location and first impressions of Old Mill Holiday Park

In my opinion, Old Mill Holiday Park has one of the best locations of all the holiday parks on the Isle of Wight. The resort overlooks a harbour and is a short walk from St. Helens Beach. It competes with Nodes Point Holiday Park, which is a Parkdean Resorts site that is in the same village.

We first approached the site from St. Helens village green, which is a pretty little spot where you can imagine a vicar on a squeaky bicycle opening a village fete. 

We headed down the steep slope and found that Old Mill is split into two halves, with an upper and lower part of the resort. 

Both parts of the resort offer good views, but I would say that the lower part was my favourite of the two as it's closer to the water. 

It was quite clear to us that this whole day park is much loved and carefully looked after. There were flowers throughout the site and the grass was beautifully trimmed. There is clearly a large amount of pride in the park, which is great to see.

Accommodation at Old Mill Holiday Park

The majority of the accommodation at Old Mill are traditional style green caravans. We did spot a small number of larger properties but the majority are these standard sized caravans, some of which have balconies. They are arranged neatly and you are asked to park your vehicle in a shared car park before finding your caravan.

What I particularly liked about the accommodation at Old Mill is that it has been carefully laid out to make the most of the location. A significant number of the caravans have a great view. Personally, I find that a good view is one of the most important things when I am on holiday. Old Mill benefits from a constantly changing landscape as the tide comes and goes in the harbour. 

Besides the lodges and caravans, there are also some apartments at Old Mill, which have got two bedrooms.

Facilities at Old Mill Holiday Park

Old Mill Holiday Park does not have the same range of facilities as you would get at Parkdean Resorts Nodes Point. However, it does have a good playground as well as a games room and laundrette.

I wouldn't see this resort as somewhere that you will be spending a huge amount of your time during the day. Instead, it is a nice place to enjoy the view and to get out and explore the island.

Final thoughts on Old Mill Holiday Park

If you want a traditional style caravan park but want to avoid the big brands then Old Mill is a great choice. This is clearly a much-loved caravan site that is very well looked after. The views from most of the caravans are terrific and really add to the appeal. 

It doesn't try to compete with huge resorts, which have indoor swimming pools with flumes and activities that you can sign up for. However, the Isle of Wight has plenty to do, so you may not feel this is a big loss.
