It's not by the seaside...but did we still like Newhaven Holiday Park?

I'm writing my review of Park Holidays UK's Newhaven Holiday Park whilst sat on a bench on the Tissington Trail. The park is only a mile or so from the Trail, which we enjoyed greatly during our visit. It goes on for miles and it's traffic free and mostly flat, with nice views of rolling hills on either side for a lot of the path. 

So then, what did we think of Newhaven Holiday Park, which is just a little way north of Ashbourne in Derbyshire? ​

First impressions and vibe of Newhaven Holiday Park

The holiday park has a very smart entrance and a long driveway off a fairly busy road. It's far enough back that you don't hear the road when you're staying at the site. Surrounding the site are gorgeous green fields, many of which were filled with cows when we visited. 

The vibe here is very much peace and quiet and switching off from modern life, rather than non- stop entertainment that you get at some big holiday parks in the UK. I would put it in the small to mid-sized category of resort. ​

Accommodation at Newhaven Holiday Park

The first accommodation that you come to when you arrive at Park Holidays UK Newhaven holiday park is the touring and camping field, which has sensibly been placed on the flatter part of the resort. We aren't campers or tourers but this looked to be very well laid out with neat areas and some hard standing for the tourers. ​

Further back are the caravans and lodges that make up the majority of the site at Newhaven. Most of the accommodation is caravans, which I would say are typically the 12 foot wide variety for anyone who is keeping notes. There were also some larger lodges and some wider caravans.

Quite a good number of the caravans have a bit of a view of the rolling hills, although it is quite a leafy park with trees surrounding a lot of the site and obscuring the view in places.

Facilities and activities at Newhaven Holiday Park

Needless to say, Newhaven is not trying to compete with the likes of Butlin or the bigger Haven resorts. It doesn't have a swimming pool, climbing wall or a huge great amusement arcade that swallows pound coins. 

However, it does have a playground, which we found towards the bottom of the site, near to the camping area. There's also a shop, which doubles up as the reception. 

Beyond that, this resort is much more about getting out and enjoying the countryside in Derbyshire. The location is somewhat further into the rural part of the county compared to its sister park of Ashbourne Heights. We spent a good deal of time trying to get a signal on our mobile phone, for example, although we did eventually succeed. ​

Final thoughts ​

If you're looking for a beach holiday park with endless activities, which mean you won't need to leave the site....then I would not visit Newhaven. Hopefully you haven't been looking at a Derbyshire holiday thinking that you will be spending your time at the seaside. 

Instead, Newhaven is a well kept, tidy and friendly holiday park that provides a good base for exploring.
