After spending some time at Haven Seashore Holiday Park, I concluded that it shares a lot in common with Haven Caister on Sea Holiday Park (read the blog). They are both excellent sites that I can highly recommend if you fancy a trip to Great Yarmouth. If they had a boxing match against each other then I'd probably give Caister on Sea a narrow points victory, but it certainly wouldn't be a knockout. Looking beyond the greyWhen I visited Seashore Holiday Park, it was blowy and grey. Thankfully, I have developed the ability to work beyond such surface things and could imagine how lovely it would be on a sunny day. The location of Seashore is a good one with a large number of the caravans having a sea view. Well, more accurately, they have a great view of the sand dunes with the sea a long way in the distance. This is very typical of a Norfolk beach, so I'm not going to hold it against Seashore. This is also where personal preference comes into it - you may prefer a view of sand dunes, whereas I prefer to see the water sparkling close up. Communal areas at SeashoreIt's quite obvious from visiting the park that Haven has invested a lot of money at Seashore. Many of the caravans are looking pretty new and there is quite a lot to do in the communal areas. Personally, I think Caister on Sea's communal areas and Adventure Village is a little bit smarter and more modern looking, but there isn't a huge amount between them (I promise this review won't just turn into an advert for Haven Caister on Sea). On my visit, I walked past trampoline bungees and a climbing wall as well those giant pillows you can jump onto - if you feel inclined and can spare a few quid. There are also some chain restaurants that you can eat out at including Burger King and Papa John's. The Holiday Park Guru Tarmac TestThis is only a small thing but whenever I visit a holiday park (which is pretty often), I look at whether the roads around the site are smooth or full of potholes. This is a reliable sign to me of whether a holiday park has been invested in or whether it is a bit past its best and needs some money spending on it. My theory is that smooth tarmac isn't something you can promote in the brochure, but it is something that you notice when you arrive. It shows that the resort wants you to be impressed rather than just wants you to make a booking. At Seashore, I can report that the tarmac was lovely and smooth. I've been to some parks that look pretty tatty with a patchwork of tarmac repairs when it really needs proper investment. Seashore's trump card!Seashore's biggest attribute is probably its swimming pool, which is one of Haven's best. They have clearly spent big money on this and it was busy when I visited. You'll see that it features in our guide to the UK's best holiday park swimming pools. Simple seafront pleasuresTowards the beach at the edge of Seashore is a road that leads to Great Yarmouth. As I sat on the bench, enjoying the view I was impressed to see a little road train go past. There used to be one of these on my beloved Isle of Wight that we called the Dotto Train - but it ended a few years ago. Personally, I think this sort of thing adds a lot to a holiday, both because it's good fun and because it's a good way to move children around without them complaining too much about walking. How does Seashore compare to its Norfolk rivals?I have now visited all of Norfolk's Haven resorts. My personal opinion is that Haven Caister on Sea is slightly better located as the beach leads directly off the holiday park straight onto the sand. At Seashore, you need to make your way through lots of sand dunes and you sometimes need to cross over a road to get there as well. That's a very small complaint though and I think it's a very good holiday park overall. Seashore also has the advantage of being closer to Great Yarmouth, which makes it much more convenient for a trip to the bigger amusements. Haven Seashore isn't a particularly leafy holiday park so my advice is to try and get a caravan towards the beach if you can. It's a very flat site and you don't get a sea view unless you are right on the front row. Anyway, that's enough waffle from me. I'm writing this whilst sat on a bench admiring the sea in front of Seashore. I suppose I'll have to move at some point!
