We got a bit of a surprise when we visited The Bay Filey (Ed: great teaser!)

The Bay Filey Holiday Village was certainly not we what we were expecting, having visited several Away Resorts holiday parks and villages in the past (read our comparison of all of them here).

That's not a negative point, but it's certainly very different from most holiday parks in that lots of the accommodation is houses rather than caravans and lodges.

The mix of houses and lodges at The Bay Filey

As we got our bearings and made our way around the site after arriving, we concluded that some parts of the site look like a very modern and nicely done housing development. The notable difference is that they have a much nicer range of architecture than you typically get on new build properties.

Alongside this are quite a few typical holiday properties, which are the lodges that we were expecting to find at the site. 

Some of the houses are owned privately, whilst others are owned by Away Resorts and are available for hire as self catering apartments (see how they compare to other Away Resorts in this guide).

That makes it somewhere to consider if you like clean and convenient accommodation but sometimes find caravans to be a bit wobbly and basic.

Facilities and activities at The Bay Filey

The facilities at The Bay Filey are good, but are certainly much more toned down than those at the nearby Haven Primrose Valley Holiday Park, which shares the same stretch of coastline.

The resort has a tennis court that was looking very well maintained

Beach access from The Bay Filey

Towards the back of The Bay Filey is a footpath that leads down to a beach. It must be said that this beach is one of the finest for family days out in this part of England, with glorious golden sand that seems to go on for miles and miles. 

It's a bit of a walk to get there but you don't have to cross over any roads and you might be able to persuade your children that the walk is part of the adventure. That wouldn't work with mine but you might have more luck!

Vibe and feel at The Bay Filey 

The Bay Filey was built on a former Butlins site, but it certainly doesn't share the same traditional vibe and is a much more modern sort of resort. 

We were also really impressed with how clean, neat and leafy the site is, with very little sign of peeling paint or things falling apart. The roads and pavements are well maintained and during our visit the grass was neatly cut. Everything looked very trim and tidy. 

So, whilst The Bay Filey is certainly not a conventional caravan holiday park, it is a great spot to get to know this lovely stretch of Yorkshire. If you don't mind a slightly smaller swimming pool and a smaller range of places to eat than you would get at a big Haven resort, then I would certainly add it to your Yorkshire holiday park shortlist.
