The vast majority of the holiday parks that we feature on Holiday Park Guru are seaside resorts. I am rather obsessed with the UK's coastline and it would take something quite impressive to drag me away from the seaside when planning a holiday. With that in mind, we visited Ashbourne Heights Holiday Park, which is about as far from the sea as you can get in England. Luckily, we were very impressed with a very smart and scenic holiday park. It is now owned by Park Holidays UK, which took on resorts from a company called Park Leisure in 2022. First impressions of Ashbourne Heights Holiday ParkYou'll find Ashbourne Heights in a pretty rural part of Derbyshire, a couple of miles outside of the upmarket town of Ashbourne. As we came off the main road, we began to climb up a long steep hill. This is always a good sign when you're going on holiday because it means you're likely to get good views from your accommodation. When we finally got to the top and reached Ashbourne Heights Holiday Park we were impressed with the rolling hills of Derbyshire that can be seen from the park. The park itself is relatively flat, which is good for the campers and tourers that are staying at the site but does mean that you only get a view from some parts of the resort. Exploring the site at Ashbourne HeightsI would put Ashbourne Heights in the small to mid-sized holiday park category. Of course, it's not going to compete with the big Haven or Butlins resorts, but then again I don't think that is really what it is trying to achieve. Instead, it is a really smart and cared-for holiday park with immaculately smooth roads and neatly trimmed pathways. Within the centre of the site is a large and well looked after playground that makes a good focal point for summer evenings. It's also got a modestly sized swimming pool, as well as reception area, which doubles up as a shop. As you'll gather, Ashbourne Heights isn't the sort of park to come to if you're hoping to do high ropes, NERF inflatable courses and bungee trampolines (read this guide if that's what you want). If you're after peace and quiet and a lovely rural setting, then Ashbourne Heights is a great choice. Accommodation at Ashbourne Heights Holiday ParkMost of the accommodation at Ashbourne Heights is caravans and lodges. As we explored the site we didn't really see any that looked tatty and past their best, which isn't really the case at every holiday park we visit. There are also a good number of small pods, which are about the size of a large tent and which provide a hybrid between a caravan and camping. These look good fun, although I'm not sure Mrs Guru would be up for shared toilet facilities. Location of Ashbourne Heights Holiday ParkThe trump card of Ashbourne Heights Holiday Park is its proximity to the Tissington Trail. This is a 13 mile cycling and walking route that is mostly flat and shows off some lovely scenery in Derbyshire. The section of the track that we explored was completely traffic free, which gave us the opportunity to have some relaxing cycle rides without the fear that a car was suddenly going to appear! Final thoughtsOverall then, we were very impressed with Ashbourne Heights Holiday Park.
Of course it doesn't have a beach nearby, but if you were expecting a seaside holiday in Derbyshire then you've only got yourself to blame. It doesn't have an abundance of activities but it is close enough to quite a few large attractions if you don't mind a little bit of a drive (Alton Towers is only 25 minutes' drive away).
